Financial Freedom
Why are Christians afraid to talk about money? I know talking about finances is not my favorite thing to do. And why are we so scared of the word tithe? Recently I heard someone say that the average Christian is more afraid of the word tithe than they are the devil. I can believe it. But why is that?
In May we will begin a new series called Financial Freedom. I decided that if Jesus thought it was important to talk about money, then maybe we should too. I know people are struggling financially. You can’t turn on the television without hearing something about the economy. One of our most popular prayer requests centers around finances. And as a new church start, well I know all too well about the worry of finances. Yes, I think it’s time to talk about money. Like I said: If Jesus thought it was important, then maybe we should too.
I don’t know if you realize it or not, but in the Gospels, the thing Jesus talked about more than anything else was the Kingdom of God. That’s probably not surprising. What may surprise you is that the second most popular topic Jesus addressed was money. In the greatest sermon of all time, Jesus said: “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be” (Matthew 6:21 NLT). That’s what this upcoming study is about. It’s about more than just money – it’s about our hearts!
